Mardi Gras Comes to San Diego: Gator by the Bay Returns for a Four-Day Celebration

If you’ve ever wanted a reason to trade your usual weekend plans for something a little more lively, Gator by the Bay is back May 7–10 — bringing a full dose of Louisiana culture to the San Diego waterfront.

Held each year over Mother’s Day weekend at Spanish Landing Park, the four-day festival blends live music, dancing, and deeply rooted Cajun and Creole traditions into one of the more distinctive events on the local calendar. Think less “themed festival” and more immersive, all-day experience.

Seven Stages, 100+ Performances

Music is at the center of it all. With over 100 acts performing across seven stages, you’ll find everything from Zydeco and blues to Cajun and New Orleans-style jazz — often with dance floors just steps away.

And this isn’t the kind of event where people stand on the sidelines. Between sets, the Bon Temps Social Club Dance Pavilion keeps things moving with free, easygoing lessons throughout the day. No experience required — just a willingness to jump in.

Come Hungry (You’ll Want To)

For a lot of people, the food alone is reason enough to go.

Each year, thousands of pounds of crawfish are brought in from Louisiana, alongside a lineup of vendors serving up beignets, po’boys, gumbo, and other Southern staples. It’s one of the few festivals where the food actually lives up to the hype — and then some.

There’s also a Taste of Louisiana Cooking Pavilion, where chefs lead demos and share techniques you can take home (if you’re feeling inspired).

More Than Music

What sets Gator by the Bay apart is how much it leans into the culture behind it.

Beyond the main stages, you’ll find workshops, jam sessions, and storytelling from Louisiana musicians and chefs — plus smaller moments that give the festival a more personal feel. It’s the kind of event where you can spend a few hours wandering and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface.

A Festival That Actually Works for Everyone

While the energy leans festive, it’s also surprisingly easygoing. Families post up with chairs and blankets, groups drift between stages, and there’s plenty of space to settle in for the day.

Kids 17 and under get in free with a paid adult, and there’s a dedicated Kidz Zone with activities running throughout the weekend — making it one of the more approachable festivals to bring a group to.

An Easy Yes for Mother’s Day Weekend

Whether you’re planning something with friends or looking for a more relaxed way to spend Mother’s Day weekend, Gator by the Bay hits a rare balance: lively, but not overwhelming; immersive, but still easy to drop into for a few hours.

You can stay all day or just catch a few sets — but either way, expect to leave with a little more music in your head and probably powdered sugar on your hands.
