A familiar North County coffee destination has arrived in North City — and it’s bringing more than just a morning caffeine fix with it.

Necessity Coffee, the local concept known for its thoughtful drink program and quietly magnetic community vibe, has opened its second location in San Marcos’ fast-growing North City district.

The expansion, which comes on the heels of Necessity’s newest (and larger) Encinitas location, marks a natural next step for founder Jon Runion — whose vision for has always extended beyond the cup.

Coffee, But Make It Intentional

Necessity’s ethos shows up in the details: an approachable menu, a welcoming environment, and a natural emphasis on human connection. It’s less about grabbing coffee and more about being somewhere you actually want to spend time.

That same philosophy extends to the coffee itself.

Since early 2023, Necessity has leaned into working with producers who are pushing the boundaries of what coffee can be — from anaerobic and carbonic fermentations to co-fermented profiles that bring out unexpected notes like tropical fruit or spice. It’s a more experimental approach, but one that’s grounded in curiosity rather than novelty for novelty’s sake.

That same mindset carries through to how the menu is served. Nearly every coffee on the bar can be prepared multiple ways — as a pour over, flash brew, or even pulled as an espresso — giving guests the opportunity to experience the same bean through a range of expressions.

Like the coffee menu, it’s intentionally kept small, evolving often, and built around quality over quantity.

The new location at 250 North City Drive places Necessity Coffee at the center of one of North County’s most intentionally designed neighborhoods — alongside A Lo Fresco, Christophe Rull Patisserie, J. Brix Wines, Mesa Rim, and Wynston’s Ice Cream Co., among others.

North City has quickly emerged as a hub for walkable living, bringing together restaurants, cafés, fitness studios, and local businesses into a cohesive, community-driven environment. It even has its own run club that meets every Thursday at 7AM — aptly named North City Run Club — underscoring the neighborhood’s emphasis on connection.

Necessity fits seamlessly into that mix: another layer in a neighborhood designed for lingering mornings and spontaneous meetups.
