Where to Find Waterfalls in North County

PHOTO VIA THE SIMPLE HIKER

Peñasquitos Falls | Rancho Peñasquitos

Peñasquitos Falls, nestled within the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, offers a picturesque yet low-key waterfall experience. Accessible via the Park Village trail, the hike meanders through shaded groves and open meadows before arriving at the falls. While not towering, the cascade flows gently over large boulders, creating a peaceful spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty. Best visited after a good rain, the falls are a refreshing reward along this moderate trail, with pools that invite a quick splash or simply the chance to enjoy the escape in nature.

Copper Creek Falls | Carlsbad

Copper Creek Falls, located within the Rancho La Costa Preserve, is a seasonal feature that offers hikers a stop along this moderately challenging trail. The waterfall, which flows after substantial rain, adds a nice touch to the landscape but can be dry during much of the year. The trail itself is the main draw, weaving through chaparral-covered hills and offering expansive views of the surrounding Carlsbad and San Marcos areas. It’s a great spot for a local hike with a bit of elevation and scenic variety.

Elfin Forest Recreational Preserve | Elfin Forest

In the winter months or after a good rainstorm, head to the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve. The most well-known spot is called the “Way Up Trail,” which leads to Olivenhain Dam and Reservoir. While the waterfall is not the main highlight of the reserve and can dry up during the summer months, it can be a pleasant surprise along the trail when flowing. The reserve itself is known for its scenic views, diverse habitats, and hiking trails.

Lake Hodges Reservoir | Escondido

The waterfall at Lake Hodges is a hidden gem that comes to life after heavy rains, offering a serene escape for nature lovers. Located near the Del Dios Gorge Trail, the waterfall cascades down rocky cliffs into a tranquil pool, creating a lovely scene (and sound) amidst the chaparral landscape. Though it’s a seasonal feature, the hike to the falls is worth it — especially after a winter storm when the water flows at its best. The surrounding trails provide awesome views of the lake and hills, making this waterfall a highlight on a day out in the Lake Hodges area.

San Diego Botanic Gardens | Encinitas

Ok — so while not natural, we have to give this waterfall a shout-out. The San Diego Botanic Garden’s tropical rainforest garden is home to a charming, man-made waterfall that adds a peaceful touch to the lush, exotic setting. Beyond the waterfall, the gardens are a must-visit for their 37 acres of diverse ecosystems — featuring everything from Mediterranean landscapes to desert blooms. With over 5,000 plant species, including a bamboo grove and tons of succulents, the garden offers an escape and a unique opportunity to explore the world of plants in one beautiful setting in North County. Consider the (man-made) waterfall a bonus!
