Whether it’s your first year attending the iconic Del Mar Races Opening Day or you’re looking for tips on how to enhance your annual adventure, we’ve got everything you need to make the most out of race day.
Opening Day at Del Mar is a highly anticipated event, and tickets can sell out quickly. Tickets open within the first week of May (mark your calendar for next year!).
PS: Tickets already sold out? Head to StubHub or another third party site (Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist) to grab one (just be sure to do your due diligence to avoid scams!)
What’s Opening Day without a hat?
Etsy and Amazon can be a great place to start — but don’t be afraid to scour vintage stores or even make your own to really stand out from the crowd.

Traffic and parking can get crowded later int he day, so aim to get to the track for a good parking spot and to get settled before the excitement begins. Plan to arrive at least an hour before the first race. Doors will open at 11:30AM with the first race at 2PM.
Walk around to check out the variou food and drink options, vendors, and entertainment areas. And don’t miss the paddock area where you can see the horses up close before they race!

Even if you’re not the gambling type, putting even just $5 on a race can add to the excitement. Opt for some basic bets (no one will judge if you’re betting on name alone!) which can be done at the window with a teller. Then find a good spot to watch the races, grab a drink, and enjoy the races!del m

A fun tradition where participants show off their creative and elaborate hats, enter the Hat Contest yourself or simply enjoy watching. Check the schedule for the time and location of the contest.
If you decide to enter, you could win a share of more than $4,000 in prizes in one of four categories: Best Racing Theme, Most Glamorous, Best Fascinator, and Best Flowers. Show off your creation before 3 PM in the Plaza de Mexico on Opening Day. Winners will be announced after the 6th race.
Head to local haunts Brigantine, Red Tracton’s, or Pamplemousse for a post-race dinner. Be sure to book reservations in advance, as they’re sure to fill up closer to Opening Day.
