There’s a certain kind of place that feels less like a business and more like a secret.

The kind of place you hear about from a friend, save to your notes app, and eventually find yourself standing outside wondering if you’re in the right location.

Anigma, a newly opened hidden cocktail lounge in Encinitas, is exactly that kind of place.

Opened on May 28 and tucked discreetly along South Coast Highway 101 beside The Roxy Encinitas, the 47-seat concept is the latest project from hospitality veteran Paula Vrakas and her partners. But unlike many new openings competing for attention, Anigma seems intentionally designed to reveal itself slowly. The experience begins before guests ever reach the bar itself.

Reservations come with a riddle delivered via text message. Solving it leads visitors into Archive, a neighboring retail space curated with artwork, home goods, ceramics, jewelry, and products from San Diego-based makers. Hidden somewhere within the shop is a code that unlocks Anigma’s custom astrolabe-inspired entrance—a dramatic golden portal that serves as the threshold between the everyday and something altogether more transportive.

Once inside, the atmosphere shifts immediately.

Velvet drapery, candlelit corners, warm brass accents, marble and quartzite surfaces, and a cathedral-inspired back bar create a setting that feels equal parts European salon, private members club, and fever dream. The design language—described by the team as “astro-deco”—blends astrological symbolism with Art Deco influences, resulting in a space that feels both theatrical and intimate.

The details reward close attention.

Throughout the lounge, guests will find antique curiosities sourced from across the country, original artwork, salvaged architectural elements, and vintage objects collected personally by Vrakas. Among them are original tin ceiling tiles dating back to an 1860s Wyoming saloon, complete with visible bullet holes, and lighting salvaged from the longtime North County institution Captain Keno’s.

Yet Anigma isn’t simply about aesthetics.

The concept is rooted in the idea of hidden knowledge—an interpretation of the word “enigma” that inspired the venue’s name. That theme carries through the entire experience, from the entrance ritual to the cocktail menu itself.

Signature drinks are organized around stories, symbols, folklore, and mythology. Cocktails like Eye of Providence and Tria Prima draw inspiration from themes of insight, transformation, and alchemy, while rotating seasonal offerings explore regional legends and local lore. One standout, The Man Who Made It Rain, references Charles Hatfield, the famously controversial rainmaker whose efforts helped shape San Diego history. Other creations pull from maritime myths, desert folklore, and esoteric traditions, turning each drink into part cocktail, part conversation piece.

The menu also includes spirit-free options and a concise selection of small bites designed to complement the experience without distracting from it. Think Greek-style dolmades, rotating deviled eggs, and chocolate-covered strawberries and cherries sourced from Strawberry Shack.

For longtime North County residents, Anigma represents something relatively rare: a hospitality concept willing to prioritize immersion over efficiency and atmosphere over trend.

That philosophy is perhaps best understood through Vrakas herself.

Before opening The Roxy Encinitas in 2016, she worked nearly every position the hospitality industry has to offer—from dishwasher and line cook to bartender and bar manager. Her career also included service in the United States Air Force, experience as a veterinary technician, and leadership roles overseeing large-scale beverage operations at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. The result is an approach to hospitality that feels deeply hands-on and intentionally personal.

While The Roxy has become known for its old-world ambiance and live music programming, Anigma moves in a different direction—smaller, moodier, and more mysterious. Yet both concepts share the same underlying goal: creating spaces that encourage people to slow down, stay awhile, and feel transported somewhere beyond the ordinary.

In a coastal town known for sunshine, surfboards, and casual afternoons, Anigma introduces something a little unexpected.

Not a hidden speakeasy in the traditional sense.

More like a carefully constructed world waiting to be discovered.
