Culinary Dropout Brings Edgy Comfort Food and Live Music to Del Mar

The first West Coast location of Culinary Dropout, the bold and buzzy restaurant concept by Sam Fox and Fox Restaurant Concepts, is now open in Del Mar Highlands Town Center. Taking over the former Tilly’s retail space, this 8,000-square-foot eatery delivers scratch-made comfort food, inventive cocktails, and a laid-back vibe that’s already turning heads.

Comfort Food, Reimagined

At Culinary Dropout, flavor comes first. The menu features nostalgic favorites with a twist—from soft pretzels with provolone fondue to 36-hour pork ribs slathered in house-made jalapeño molasses BBQ sauce. Guests can also expect standouts like chicken cacio e pepe pasta, Korean ribeye cap, and “The Slicer” antipasti board (a cheeky Seinfeld reference for those in the know).

Cocktails With a Kick (and a Wink)

The bar program is as creative as the food. Signature cocktails include the Tijuana Spa Water (tequila, jalapeño, pineapple, and mint), the Full Moon Party (lemongrass gin and Thai basil), and zero-proof options like the Vida Verdita and Society Crush for N/A fans who still want full flavor.

The Space

Designed with a rebellious edge and SoCal soul, Culinary Dropout’s Del Mar outpost features bold murals, a covered patio, cozy booths, and a custom Converse Chuck Taylor wall installation. It’s part vintage skate culture tribute, part elevated dining room, and all good vibes.

True to its roots, the restaurant also doubles as a laid-back live music venue with performances Thursday through Sunday. Come for dinner, stay for the show.
