There’s no summer tradition quite like Opening Day at Del Mar. Equal parts horse racing, fashion show, people-watching, and celebration, it’s one of North County’s most iconic events—and one that’s worth doing well. Whether you’re attending for the first time or it’s become an annual tradition, here’s how to make the most of the day.

Secure Your Tickets Early

Opening Day is one of the fastest-selling events of the Del Mar racing season, so purchasing tickets well in advance is essential. If tickets have already sold out, reputable resale marketplaces can sometimes be a good option—but always verify the seller before purchasing.

Lean Into the Dress Code

Opening Day is one of the few occasions where dressing up is part of the experience. While there’s no official dress code for general admission, Opening Day is known for elevated “California chic” style—think daytime dresses, linen, tailored separates, statement hats, and polished footwear. Keep in mind that premium spaces like the Turf Club and private suites do enforce a more formal dress code.

Arrive Before the Crowds

Half the fun is enjoying the atmosphere before the grandstands fill up. Getting there early gives you time to explore the grounds, grab a drink, watch the horses in the paddock before the first race, and settle in before the day’s energy reaches full speed. The gates open at 11:30am.

Wander Beyond Your Seat

While the races are the main event, Opening Day is just as much about the experience around them. Walk the grounds, explore the food and beverage offerings, spend time in the paddock, and don’t be afraid to simply people-watch—it’s one of the best shows of the day.

Place at Least One Bet

You don’t have to be an experienced bettor to join in. Even a small wager can make each race more exciting, and the betting windows are happy to help newcomers navigate the basics. (Choosing based on the horse’s name is a surprisingly common strategy. Need tips on how to place your bet? Start here.

Don’t Miss the Hat Contest

One of Opening Day’s longest-running traditions, the annual Hat Contest celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and personal style. Whether you’re competing or simply watching, it’s one of the day’s signature events.

If you’re entering, arrive at the Plaza de Mexico before 3 PM to showcase your design. Participants compete for a share of more than $5,000 in prizes across five categories: Most Glamorous, Best Fascinator, Best Flowers, Best Racing Theme, and All Others. Winners are announced following the sixth race.

Keep the Celebration Going

When the final race wraps up, the day isn’t over. Many racegoers head to nearby restaurants for dinner before continuing on to one of the area’s Opening Day after-parties, making it one of North County’s liveliest summer evenings.
